I rushed home from work today to beat the rain and pick my first round of green beans. These beans are the Derby variety. They grow extremely well in our area. I picked this bunch from only half of my green bean patch, about 50 square foot. This was over 12 pounds of beans. They still have quite a few small beans on them and numerous blooms. The rain should kick them back in gear too. This is good timing. Luckily, I was able to beat the rain. If the beans got wet I would have had to wait until they dried. Touching wet bean leaves spreads fungus and will contribute to the demise of your plants. I planted my other patch of beans a week after these so I could throttle the production. I will be picking those in about a 5 to 7 days. I have a new recipe to try this weekend with my beans - Sicilian Style Roasted Vegetables with Balsamic Syrup. It is posted under taterecipes. It looks tasty! We will be canning a bunch of these tomorrow. I will let you know how many quarts this makes.
