For the first time in two years of trying I have organically grown zucchini and yellow squash. The Squash Vine borer is one of the worst pests in our area. They will destroy most any kind of squash family plant and are hard to defeat. The best strategy is to try and grow big plants before the blooms appear. If you can do this you may get some produce because the vine will outlive the borer damage long enough to bear fruit. Despite, my triumph here I still face defeat. At least two of my zucchini plants are showing signs of the borer in the stem. I could try to stab a needle through the stem and kill the borer, but the damage is probably already done. I will savor my victory while it lasts and eat zucchini and squash. There are at least 6 or 7 yellow squash and 3 zucchini that will be ready for harvest tomorrow in addition to those shown here.
